I have to say, when I started watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Koro ni, I was pretty surprised to say the least. When first looking at the artwork and characters for Higurashi, I expected it to be more of a "cute" and/or girly style show, but even in the first few seconds of the show, there is already a lot darkness and violence shown. Needless to say, the "unexpectedness", the confusing yet deep storyline, and the awesome characters were all a factor in making this one of my favorite series ever. The story of Higurashi takes place in the summer of 1983, in the small and relitively unknown villiage of Hinamizawa.
A boy named Keiichi Maebara is a new resident of the small villiage, and quickly makes friends with fellow classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Satako Hojou, and Rika Furude. Around that time he discovers that a chain of bizarre deaths have been happening years prior during the villiage's annual Watanagashi Festival, which is a celebration for the villiagers to give thanks to Oyashiro, the villiage's local god.
Every year for four years, one person had either been killed, or just dissapeared. The story of Higurashi is usually done in story arcs. In each arc, the perspective of the mysteries is different, and is usually lead by a different protagonist. In every arc, Keiichi, or any of his friends, becomes paranoid, and as a result crime, murder, and trust issues happen among the group of friends. The first season consists of "question" arcs, then the second season (Higurashi Kai), the "answer" arcs take place. The story is pretty confusing and hard to follow, but is very interesting nontheless.
The more episodes you watch, the more you'll be able to understand it. The storytelling in Higurashi is some of the best I've seen in any series. The characters featured in Higurashi are one of the reasons why it is so good.
As seen in my description of the story, the show revolves around a group of classmates Keiichi, Rena, Mion, Shion, Satako, and Rika, as well as many other side characters. Each have a lot of personality, and each have a pretty interesting storyline. They also get a lot more developement as the series goes on. You'll surely have a favorite character or two, but there's a couple you'll just simply hate or not like that much. The animation of Higurashi is. okay. For the most part the animation is pretty well done, especially during the really violent, gory scenes, however, some of the characters' expressions are laughable at best, and might even take away the creepiness factor.
Thats a bad thing considering it usually happens during serious moments, but it's easy to get past that though and shouldn't make you want to stop watching. Overall, the animation is alright, but certainly not the best though. Higurashi is a very misleading anime, but in a good way. The characters have a pretty "cutesy", happy, and colorful appearance.
Something that wouldn't lead you to believe that this is a psychological horror and mystery anime, but that alone is one of the reasons I like Higurashi as much as I do. One moment, everyone is all happy and having a good time, then one moment they're all angry and paranoid, and then they are all sad and serious. It's even pretty funny at times. With all of the happiness seen in Higurashi, it makes the sadness and creepiness that much more intense and effective.
Overall, the story, the characters, the creepiness and mystery surrounding the setting and characters make Higurashi no Naku Koro ni very intense and enjoyable. It's not for everybody, but the people who really like anime and mystery should have no problem enjoying Higurashi as much as I have. I definitely reccomend trying it out.
